BLACKWOOD Review

BLACKWOOD

IZilla Games, AttritoM7 Productions

By day, you run a DVD store in 2012 New York. By night, you’re a ruthless assassin. BLACKWOOD is a cinematic third-person shooter with grounded melee combat, brutal takedowns, responsive gunplay, and a double life to manage.

I really enjoyed this game, the video store is alright in general and the gunplay in the night missions is really well done and scratched an itch. I gave up on the game though at the car mission, there are no check points so you have to restart the level every time either you crash or another car touches your car and you completely spin out of control. Its a great idea for the game but it at least needs some good checkpoints and if there are some they either never triggered or it needs more. I'll come back to the game when it's updated more.

Apart from that the video store section of the game is alright at best, it's simple and does what it needs to do but I think the major problem I have with it is that it's too long in contrast to the night missions. Also I didn't see much point in jumping behind the till because the other person working doesn't actually help customers and you loose store rep.

The night missions are fun from what I played, aside from the car mission and the potential chapter 1 boss that a lot of people have complained about. The gunplay is fantastic and really emulates that John Wick style, I think it can still be fine tuned a bit but the devs have done a fantastic job so far and seem to be updating the game a lot.

The hub world itself works well but it is missing that slight nudge to let the players know where the night missions can be found. The main character is alright overall, the voice acting is kinda weak but it also could be what the devs were going for.

I've seen that the developers are still updating the game which makes me wanna come back to it in a few months to try it again but for now I don't recommend.
