For years, Nier was a game I hesitated to recommend. It's one of my favorite overall narratives in a game, but the actual act of playing the game was... Awful. It was a chore, top to bottom. Thankfully, Square Enix had a remake made and it looks, plays, and sounds better than ever. They got back all the original voice cast to re-do their lines, with the exception of the protagonist himself. Long story short, he's no longer a big muscle daddy. He's now a youthful anime boy. It's a whole thing, but it doesn't impact any major elements of the game. The "multiple playthroughs to get all the endings" can be tedious, but it's so, so worth it. Especially if you were someone who loved the original Nier... Just keep playing it.
