My Top 7 Announcements from Gamescom Opening Night Live!
Because 2026 wasn't stacked enough already!

The largest gaming event in the world is finally upon us in Cologne, Germany! Gamescom 2026 has been building up to be the largest one yet, with the entire exhibitor space selling out completely for the first time. All the big players are there to show off what they've got in the oven: Nintendo, Microsoft, SEGA, Square Enix; you name it!
With Opening Night Live having officially kicked things off, here are my top announcements from the show that I'm excited to dive into (in no particular order)!
#1: Turok: Origins
I was not around when the original Turok trilogy came out, so Origins is my first exposure to the franchise; and what a first impression it was. I greatly enjoyed blasting through dinosaurs when I tried this game out at Summer Game Fest this year, so to finally see a release date come out for this one is exciting! Yes, I know Saber is not exactly anyone's favorite developer right now, but I am still eager to get my hands on this game when it comes out.
#2: 1001 Threads of Mizan
A 1-3 person cooperative action‑adventure set in a sprawling Arabian fantasy world. Soar across mythic landscapes on nimble flying carpets, battle colossal jinn that tower above the world, and unravel a tale of betrayal that threatens to tear the world apart. Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, this is a shared journey where exploration, combat, and storytelling are woven into a single, unforgettable experience.
I'm admittedly not very cultured when it comes to games that take place in Middle Eastern worlds. The furthest extent I've experienced those settings was in The House of Hikmah, which I reviewed earlier this year, Sonic and the Secret Rings and its foray into the story of the Arabian Knights, and exploring Aggrabah in Kingdom Hearts. Like I said, not very cultured at all.
However, the trailer for 1001 Threads of Mizan floored me with its trailer featuring the protagonist on a flying carpet, a gorgeous Arabian fantasy landscape, and intriguing boss designs! According to the press release sent out with the announcement, this is a debut project with talent consisting of former BioWare, Hi-Rez, Ubisoft Montréal, and Bungie; to say this is a stacked lineup of talent is an understatement! That said, this means the folks at MBC Game Studio have a lot more to prove when this game comes out eventually, as we've seen time and time again how former credits don't exactly translate to a blockbuster hit. Regardless, I was impressed by this trailer, and I sincerely hope this game plays even a fraction as good as it looked in that reveal trailer!
#3: Tides of Annihilation
Tides of Annihilation is a fantasy action-adventure inspired by Arthurian legend. Uncover the mystery of an otherworldly invasion in a shattered modern London, unleashing hordes of enemies. As Gwendolyn, fight alongside spectral knights to save your family and piece a broken world back together.
China strikes again with another visually stunning game in the form of Tides of Annihilation. I was initially worried it would be another gacha title, as those games tend to show up in spades in these showcases with trailers that show little to no gameplay; but nope, this is a bona fide singleplayer action-adventure game!
Going off that lack of gameplay shown, though, I do wish we heard a little more about how the summons work in this game, as they demonstrated the protagonist Gwendolyn summoning Sir Lancelot to assist her in battle. It's action-adventure, but how in-depth is the combat? What do the other Knights of the Round Table provide in terms of combat techniques and mechanics? All this is to say that I'm asking such questions because I'm very interested in seeing more on this game. Sadly, there is no confirmed release window, so I'll be holding my excitement for the long haul until we see more on this one.
#4: Mega Man: Dual Override
After stealing the show at The Game Awards last year, I was afraid we would be waiting until early 2027 at least to see more gameplay on the Blue Bomber's return—but Geoff delightfully surprised us all with another brief look at Mega Man: Dual Override! This time, we got confirmation of Proto Man making an appearance alongside a new boss character named Twinkle Girl.
While the trailer was a brief gameplay showing, it was enough to get my attention and continue to look forward to what 2027 has to offer us! Admittedly, I have yet to play a Mega Man game, but I have played several games inspired by the series, and I see Dual Override as an appealing entry point, so I'll certainly be staying plugged into this title as we inch closer towards its release window; whenever in 2027 that may be.
#5: Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons
Play as Kaatri in Warlock, a single-player, third-person action-adventure set in a D&D-inspired open world. Wield forbidden magic to bend the rules around you. Across exploration and combat, every challenge is a test of creativity, preparation, and cunning.
In case you haven't met me, I'm a sucker for a good RPG. When I saw the extended gameplay reveal for this game that showed off the puzzle-solving, magic systems, and open-world exploration, I was damn near ready to throw my wallet at the screen. The 8 1/2 minutes of pure gameplay had my attention in a chokehold, as I could see myself getting lost in the expansive world and characters—including the performance of none other than Maggie Robertson of Resident Evil: Village fame as Tasha.
Now I must admit something that might seem controversial: I have never played Dungeons & Dragons, so the inspiration is lost on me with this announcement. This is not a knock on the game, but rather it feels like this game was made for someone like me. In an interview with the developers via Temple of Geek, Invoke Studio's VP of Creative, Jeff Hattem, explained that while there are plenty of "deep cuts" in regards to DnD references, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is "designed for players with little to no DnD experience." Does this mean this game might finally get me into buying copious amounts of dice? We will see when this game comes out in 2027.
#6: LEGO Skylines
Build what only you can in LEGO® Skylines. In this cozy, customizable city-builder, your choices bring a living, breathing metropolis to life. Go big or obsess over the details. No instructions. Unlimited space. And there’s just one rule. Make it yours.
I don't have much to say here, as the brilliance of this game speaks for itself. LEGO is a toy that is all about building to your heart's content, and city builders lend themselves to near-infinite amounts of creativity and customization. The marriage of the city-builder genre and LEGO just makes perfect sense, and it was great to see this finally come together with the folks at Paradox Interactive. I truly cannot wait to see more on this game, as I have no doubt it will be a joy to mess around with.
#7: Final Fantasy VII Revelation
You really thought I was not going to mention this one? And no, I didn't include it last because it's in the 7th spot on the list.
What can I say about the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy that hasn't been said already? From the first game's release in 2020, this was always going to be something that ended with a bang, and Square Enix did not disappoint with this gameplay trailer. Seeing the Weapons in-engine was amazing, and the spectacle of the entire trailer really set in stone that our 7-year-long wait for the entire trilogy to be in our hands is nearly over.
Despite being a "gameplay" trailer though, I feel like there was not much to grasp on to, as most of the trailer appeared to be comprised of in-engine cutscenes. I was under the impression we would see more functional gameplay, but the most we got was Cloud and Tifa fighting a boss for all of 6 seconds. Still though, I am so excited to see the third part of this series finally come out and complete the trilogy in my Steam library.
That's a wrap on yet another Gamescom Opening Night Live! Just as I suspected, there will indeed be more video games after the September/October block, so it's good to know that the industry won't just stop after GTA VI happens. Hopefully there were some trailers that got you excited for what's to come in the gaming space in the near future!
Stay vibing and thriving everyone, and I will see you next week for your regularly scheduled content!
