Avenger

Avenger

Shin-Nihon Laser Soft Co., Ltd., Telenet Japan

Avenger is a vertically-scrolling shooter, in which the player navigates a plane through levels populated by hostile planes, tanks, cannons, ships, stationary devices, and massive boss enemies. Before each mission, the player can choose among different weapons in three categories: main, sub, and special. Main and sub weapons are fired simultaneously and have unlimited ammunition, while the powerful special attacks are accessed by pressing a different button and are limited. The player can try any combination of the three categories, for example enhancing the main rocket launcher with a pod that fires laser to the sides as a sub weapon, and a protective shield as a special one. Power-ups change properties rapidly, so the player has to catch them at a specific time to enhance either main, sub, or special weapon. Those power-ups do not change the properties of a weapon, but rather give it additional fire power.

As the newest member of a paranormal detective group operating in the greater Tokyo area, it's your responsibility to help keep modern-day Japan safe from demons, monsters, ghosts, and various mythological figures. Manage your coworkers' schedules to conduct research & development, investigate reports of local anomalies, and venture out to fight and detain evildoers. Succeed at these tasks and you might come closer to solving the mysteries and conspiracy behind this earthly invasion! Yougekitai is a 1993 Telenet DRPG/strategic simulation game where you run an agency of professionals tracking and containing dangerous entities in bubble-era Japan. The game switches between your headquarters, where you oversee day-to-day operations, and dungeons where you & your party fight enemies and explore for items or information. Character abilities range in exploration and combat, from forensics to ESP powers. While the game's story has a set cast, your selection of team members is randomized upon starting a new game, and mission choices also get semi-randomized per playthrough.

Mugen Senshi Valis: The Fantasm Soldier

Mugen Senshi Valis: The Fantasm Soldier

Wolf Team, Telenet Japan

Yuko Ahso was once an ordinary high school girl. Or least her life used to be ordinary. Her friend Reiko went out on a date with a Dark King named Rogles, and has vanished. Immediately, monsters attacked her. She thought she would die for sure, but a mystic sword named Valis appeared before her. Using the sword, Yuko defended herself against the monsters, and was whisked to a strange land, where she was told that she was the chosen Valis Warrior and must defeat Rogles, or the human world and the dream world would both be plunged into chaos. Valis: The Fantasm Soldier is a side-scrolling platformer. Yuko can jump and attack enemies with her Valis sword, which can be upgraded and used as a ranged weapon by collecting power-ups found in the stages. She can also find and use items that grant her powerful all-screen attacks or temporary invincibility. Each stage culminates with a boss battle, after which Yuko's hit points and attributes increase.

Valis III

Shin-Nihon Laser Soft Co., Ltd., Telenet Japan, NEC

After Yuko has defeated the evil Rogles, peace descended upon Earth and the magical world of Vecanti. But a new threat has arisen: an enigmatic man named Glames from the Dark World, possessor of a sword named Leethus, is planning to conquer both Earth and Vecanti, convinced that there is no other way to save his world from imminent destruction. A young girl from the Dark World named Cham escapes from Glames, and asks Yuko to help her stop him with the aid of her Valis sword. Like its predecessors in the series, Valis III is a side-scrolling platform action game. Unlike the previous installments, the player can control three characters in the game: Yuko, Cham (who uses a whip and fights similarly to Castlevania protagonists), and princess Valna from Vecanti, who is weaker physically, but can cast more powerful magic. Each of the characters can equip different weapons and has access to her own magic spells.

Hiouden

Hiouden

Wolf Team, Telenet Japan

Hiōden is a strategy game with RPG elements. The player navigates several teams of characters, mostly monsters (up to six in each team) through isometric environments. Sometimes cooperation between different player-controlled teams is required to advance. The game plays in real time, i.e. enemy parties also move and perform actions without waiting for player's input. The RPG angle is present in form of character levels - characters grow stronger after defeating enemies. It is possible to put the teams on "auto-mode", having some of them move and perform actions on their own. The game has a mouse-driven interface with a somewhat unusual feature for its time: windows. The movement field of different teams, character statistics, overview map, team management screen - everything has its own window. It is possible to enlarge any window to full screen, close it, open several small windows at the same time, and drag windows to arrange them on the screen in any way.
