Tenshi Doumei combines battlefield tactics and mech upgrades for an entertaining title. At face value, Tenshi is a tactical strategy RPG where you move units and attack or defend against cadres of adversaries. Attacks consist of long range artillery attacks and close-range bouts where you invariably punch an enemy mech. The drawback of a punch is that the opponent will counter-attack within the close range. A long range fire attack will not prompt any return fire. Close range attacks are preferable in the first few levels because they inflict more damage.

Each chapter consists of a sequence of side-view dialogue sequences in which the characters interact and converse automatically. Player interaction is limited to occasional dialogue choices which will affect the story's progression. Each chapter may also contain one or more battle sequences in which the group of kids fight against other kids or against monsters. These are turn-based top-down tactical battles in the vein of Shining Force where the player controls each member of the party individually.

Players take the role of a wizard's apprentice who's aspiring to become a mage and players are given 3 girls to choose from (Lime, Berry or Nut). To become a mage, players must study how they can make scrolls and collect the ingredients necessary to make them. The game features a first person perspective while players are at home and switches to a top-down 2D view when they go outside (The Saturn and Playstation releases render areas in 3D). There are 102 days in a year in this game and 5 seasons during which different materials can be found on the island. The game has 70 kinds of scrolls and around 150 kinds of materials to collect.

He worked hard to pass the entrance exam for the only school in the town and successfully achieved his long-cherished dream!
