The Legend of Kyrandia 2: The Hand of Fate

Westwood Studios, Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Sold Out Software, Electronic Arts, StarCraft

The land of Kyrandia is disappearing piece by piece and you are the offbeat, young mystic who must voyage to the center of the world to break the curse and save it. Your surreal journey will twist even the sharpest of minds. Traveling through a vast weirdly beautiful terrain, you must concoct potions, cast spells and lure the help of some very bizarre inhabitants to uncover the secrets that doom Kyrandia. Crafty Kyrandian veterans from the first Fables & Fiends adventure, The Legend of Kyrandia, may recognize their favorite land of giant frogs, talking trees and really strange berries. But this isn't just the same old Kyrandia! Challenging puzzles, new characters, and lots of self-conscious wisecracks from our heroine make Hand of Fate more challenging than it's predecessor.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Retaliation

Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Retaliation

Westwood Studios, Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Electronic Arts

On August 28, 1998, Westwood Studios released Red Alert Retaliation for the PlayStation, a compilation of the two PC expansion packs, including the secret Ant Missions. It is almost identical to the PlayStation port of the original Red Alert, except it introduced some new units like Tesla Tank, Shock Trooper, Chrono Tank and Mechanic, and included 105 skirmish maps. Gameplay also included an in-game sidebar code called Soylent Green Mode. In this mode all ore fields turn to people/civilians, and ore trucks harvest them with grisly sound effects. It also included 19 exclusive briefing FMV (full-motion video) clips that were not in any of the PC expansion packs, which had none. All of the videos are shown when the player either starts playing through the operational theatre from the beginning or when all the missions of the theatre are accomplished. In other cases, the briefing text is shown. The FMVs include a general for each side, telling the player the mission objectives; The Allied General Carville later appears in Red Alert 2 while Soviet General Topolov has made no further appearances in the Red Alert series.

Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat

Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat

Westwood Studios, Electronic Arts

More an action-adventure game than a straight naval sim, Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat is designed to offer PS2 and Xbox gamers the chance to live the free but dangerous life of a true pirate. Players will explore five strange new lands that hold unimagined treasures for those brave and skilled enough to claim them. Battle and conquest are also important ingredients in a pirate's lifestyle and combat takes place both on land and on the high seas. The player's character is quick with a sword and can increase her swashbuckling skills with experience. Similarly, wealth gained from adventure and victory allows the pirate to upgrade to larger ships with more deadly weaponry. A dozen unique fighting vessels will become available to skilled captains, along with special accoutrements that afford the ships extra powers. Sea battles involve a realistic combination of positioning and timing, as tall ships align themselves to fire on enemy vessels from port- and starboard-mounted weapons and time must be spent reloading the powerful cannons and guns after each shot. The ability to repair damage on the fly is also an important strategic consideration in ship-to-ship fights. Though the gameplay of this 3D adventure is oriented towards fast action, several elements of role-playing are also incorporated, to move the story along and involve the player more deeply. The lead character Katarina de Leon plots a thoughtful course for her career on the open seas. The "Black Kat" sets sail to uncover mysteries and position herself in circumstances that will increase her overall status among other pirates, securing a position of power. In addition to Katarina's well-developed storyline, the game's "Captain vs. Captain" battle mode allows a more combat-intensive, freeform style of play. Pirates ?
