In the PC versions, the game is played like a third-person action and puzzle game. The story follows a linear progression, separated into levels with a specific end goal. Spells are learned progressively via lesson levels, and unlock increasingly complex puzzles. There are also several levels in which Harry can fly on a broomstick and play Quidditch, this gameplay can also be independently accessed through the start menu.

The player must balance a good infrastructure, resources, diplomatic and trading skills, technological advancement, city and empire management, culture, and military power to succeed.

The Cheshire Cat serves as Alice's companion throughout the game, frequently appearing to guide her with cryptic comments.

The most significant difference from the previous game is that gameplay is less linear, with Hogwarts becoming more of an open world. Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots is the official expansion pack to the real-time strategy computer game Rise of Nations. The game is the second in a series of Rise of Nations games by Big Huge Games. Thrones and Patriots expanded on a variety of features in the original game, such as new monuments (called "Wonders"), nations, governments, and campaigns. It adds six nations, 4 new conquer-the-world modes, and the "Patriot" special general unit and the senate building. Gameplay still remains similar to Rise of Nations, with its wide span of ages and players still manage and expand their nations at the macro and micro levels. However, Thrones and Patriots has campaigns which offer more turn-based strategy features than the original and the ability to make decisions outside of combat. Up to eight players can play in multiplayer matches, with artificial intelligence being able to fill slots at the server host's choice. Various features were added to the game in an attempt to balance gameplay, including the addition of armed caravans and merchants.

The game utilizes the Quake 3 engine for incredible graphics as you travel through many familiar locations --Voyager, a Borg cube, a Klingon Bird of Prey, and more. The game also requires you to solve missions with the help of intelligent computer controlled teammates and allies.
